Mount Macedon Hill Station
scope: Interior design & furnishings
Architecture: Akehurst Owen Cimino | Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Tess Newman-Morris

Steeped in history and cherished by the same family for over a century, this landmark Mt Macedon property was lovingly reimagined in collaboration with Akehurst Owen Cimino Architects. Our vision was to honour its heritage while creating interiors that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
The design takes inspiration from the English country aesthetic, interpreted through an Australian lens. This pays homage not only to the home’s surroundings but also to the community’s origins, first settled by the English in the 1800s.

A mix of heirloom pieces, family artwork and carefully crafted bespoke furniture and lighting anchors the interiors in memory and meaning. Among the grand custom pieces are an Irish Georgian style console table in the entrance and a 4.2 meter parquetry dining table, crafted to become future heirlooms in their own right. Upholstery, antiques, and tailored detailing weave together to create interiors of character and authenticity.

Natural textures and a restrained neutral palette bring warmth and ease to the living spaces, kitchen and corridors, offering an inviting backdrop for family life. In contrast, each bedroom tells its own story through colour, with the hero textile on the bedhead inspiring the tonal palette that flows through walls, furnishings and finishes.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment is revealed in the dining room: a
hidden jewel enveloped in deep red grasscloth and panelling. Here, our bespoke fourteen-seat table sits beneath oak-leaf chandeliers, their organic forms echoing the motif of the dining chairs and softening the richness of the space. This cocooning room invites gathering, celebration and conversation.

It was important to have that sense of patina and history, to honour the family's story and weave it into the interiors.
